What a difference a red lipstick made...

I know, I know, I am terrible!! I said I would post things during the Christmas break but then I was too into eating and catching up with friends... But I decided to share this little story with you!
Last Friday evening I was invited to a classmate's birthday gathering at her place. I didn't really spend a lot of time getting ready, we would be in a house with few people after all. So I just put a black t-shirt, my grey imitation leather full skirt and my black booties. People who know me are well aware of the fact that I am not very fond of heavy make up and I use very basic products everyday. The everyday routine is concealer, mascara and blusher. Since it was evening I just put on some black eye pencil and a red lipstick.
I have to say, the red lipstick seems to be magical. I arrived at the classmate's house and I received compliments from everyone for how beautiful I looked. People seemed to think that I had spent a lot of time on my make up but really I hadn't, just 2 minutes longer than my 2-3 minute daily routine (as long as it would take to apply the eye pencil and the lipstick).
I have to thank my friend Vaya for giving me the lipstick as a present during Christmas because every time I wear it I seem to get compliments which is really boosting my self-confidence.
So what I learned from this story is to never underestimate the power of a red lipstick!! I encourage you to try it but remember to combine it with a very natural look on your make up so that it doesn't look cheap!!

Until next time!!

It's been a long time...

"It's been a long time since I came around, been a long time but I am back in town..."

The fashion weeks around the world are on and it is time to talk a bit about collections and the different kinds of markets.

A collection is a range of garments, accessories or products that have been designed and produced to be sold to retailers or directly to a client. This range of pieces may have been inspired by a trend, a theme or a cultural or social reflection. Usually they are designed for a specific season or occasion. A collection is the grouping of outfits or looks that are presented on the catwalk or even to web pages. Usually a collection includes a combination of colors, fabrics and figures with an emphasis according to the aesthetic of the designer. It includes 28 to 31 garments or 12 to 13 total looks.

There are 4 collections per year: Resort, Spring-Summer, PreFall and Autumn-Winter.

The show calendar for the northern hemisphere is the following

January : Haute Couture / Paris/ Spring-Summer
February- March: Ready-to-wear/ All/ Autumn- Winter
July: Haute Couture/ Paris/ Autumn- Winter
September- October: Ready-to-wear/ All/ Spring-Summer

There are fashion weeks going on all the around the world but the most important ones are New York- London- Milan- Paris.

There are 3 different kinds of markets:
Haute Couture
Ready-to-wear
Mass Market/ Fast Fashion

Haute Couture:
The term describes the luxury, the detailed elaboration combined with unique and extravagant details. Born in the Parisian fashion houses in the 19th century Couture is the highest range of the spectrum of fashion. The term "made-to-measure" is used only by the designers that have the standards by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture.

A very interesting video showing the complicated and elaborate work that is required to make an Haute Couture outfit by Chanel:

Ready-to-wear:
Also known as Pret-a-porter it became the alternative to Haute Couture in the 60s where there was a variety of sizes and they could be bought directly from the boutique. Ready-to-wear crosses between Haute Couture and the Mass Market. It is presented twice a year  and it is worked with a 12-month anticipation, investigating and developing the collection. The biggest ready-to-wear brands have also created their Bridge brands that are sold in a middle price for example Marc by Marc Jacobs, See by Chloe.

Mass Market/ Fast Fashion:
It is based on a logistics system that allows the design, the production and putting in the store in 2 weeks or less, the replacement of sold garments multiple times per week and linked to the daily registry of the sales of models, colors and sizes. The best example is Zara with its success in terms of sold volume.

Promise to be back soon with more about fast fashion!!!

Best styling videos

The following videos are some of my teacher's favorites in the matters of styling.

Chanel PreFall 2009 Moscow : The collection created for the opening of the Chanel boutique in Moscow. Everything inspired by the Russian culture and the master Karl Lagerfeld taking care of every little detail.

Louis Vuitton 2009 Madonna Advertising Campaign : The making of the campaign shot by Steven Meisel. Marc Jacobs and Madonna interact.

Beyoncé - Why don't you love me? : Pin-up style.

Robbie Williams - You know me : Inspired by the hero of the children's books Peter Rabbit.

Gwen Stefani - What you waiting for? : Inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

Gwen Stefani - Luxurious ft Slim Thung : A tribute to the Cholas and Cholos of Los Angeles.

Gwen Stefani - Cool : Italy in the 40s and the 50s.

Lily Allen - Not fair : Western and 70s Glam

The task of the day was to create a look inspired by one of the videos above. My inspiration was Lily Allen's video and more specifically her in her 70s Glam outfit.

The Kelly bag project

Our teacher was so nice that she gave to each and one of us a Kelly bag as a gift!

It was great even though it came in this form

So we took our scissors and our glue and we turned it into something like this

And then we had to create a look including the Kelly bag. This is what I came up with

(Imagine the Kelly bag as part of the look!)

Oh my bag!

People who know me know that I have an obsession with bags.
They are a treasure and the type of bags you use can say a lot about yourself. You can wear a plane pair of jeans and a white shirt but with the right bag you can create a very sophisticated look.

Let's talk terminology now!

Shoulder bag

Any type of bag that you can hang from your shoulder.

Satchel

A leather bag that is rigid and has a flat bottom. It is rectangular and it has double handle.

Clutch

It can be big or small but you always take it in your hand.

Tote

A bag with short handle, has the upper part open and it is big.

Hobo

Bohemian style bag with a handle for the shoulder.

Evening bag

With rhinestones or rich materials, it can be a clutch or something small with a handle, chain or a wristband.

Messenger

Small or medium size, in a rectangular shape, it has a long handle that crosses the body.

Structured ladylike

It is of reinforced leather so that it won't change its shape. It has a short handle that you can hold in your arm or hang it from the forearm.
